CERTIFICATION - WHAT, WHY AND HOW
What is Certification? IoPP has a Certification Program for Packaging Professionals, wherein an individual may achieve the distinguished title of Certified Packaging Professional, or CPE This title is a formal, public recognition of personal commitment, accomplishment, achievement and knowledge within the packaging industry. The process requires successful completion of a rigorous peer examination procedure,
Why Certification? Certification is a public recognition of exceptional qualifications of the individual as demonstrated by his or her understanding and command of a broad knowledge of applied packaging technology or management. CPP is a mark of distinction; as such it is an achievable and desirable career objective. It offers both economic growth and personal benefits.
How to become Certified. The basic requirement for a Certification candidate is to have a minimum of six years experience in packaging or a closely related technical discipline. Up to four years of that requirement may be credited for an undergraduate degree (and one year additional for a post graduate degree) in packaging or a closely related technical field.
Having completed this basic requirement of the IoPP Certification Program, candidates will select any two of the following options in order to demonstrate their specific qualifications for Certification: Multiple Choice Exam, Narrative Exam, Technical or Management Paper, Proof of Issued patent, Resume of Activities (5 years).
Help in becoming certified. The Virginia/Carolinas Chapter of IoPP encourages qualified members to seek Certification. And to that end, we have information that might be able to answer all questions raised by the material here provided. We offer advice, counseling, encouragement, and the loan of packaging textbooks.
We also have, available for the asking, the following IoPP materials on Certification: Certification Program, Standard Resume Format, and Professional Paper Style Guide.
Most candidates for Certification select as one of their two secondary options the Multiple Choice Exam. This has 200 questions on packaging machinery, materials, and technology. Most on the information needed can be found in one or both of the first two books listed for our legendary library. (We have ten books that are available, for study prior to a test and for reference during the test. All work is done on the honor basis at home). 70% correct (140 right answers) is considered a passing grade.
In the IoPP bulletin on Certification is an application form and lots of information, the routine on the two exams is the same. The candidate chooses the month, and sends in the fee. On the first Monday of the month, the test material is sent to the home of the candidate via 'three-day courier'. The candidate is allowed until the following Monday to complete the exam and mail it back to IoPP If the candidate chooses both exams, he must specify a different month for each. A twelvemonth period is allowed to complete all the requirements for Certification. If an exam is failed, a retest can be made available for a small fee.
